Understanding Native Title
Native title is a special right that Indigenous people have to their traditional lands. It means they have a connection to the land based on their ancient laws and customs.
The Miriuwung Gajerrong people are the traditional owners of the land where Bell Springs is located. They signed an important document called the Ord Final Agreement. This agreement helps them work together with the Western Australian government. It also includes other groups and businesses. The goal is to create good partnerships for everyone in the East Kimberley region.
How Bell Springs is Governed
The community of Bell Springs has a special group that helps manage things. This group is called the Yawoorroong Miriuwung Gajerrong Yirrgeb Noong Dawang Aboriginal Corporation. It is often called MG Corp for short.
Role of MG Corp
MG Corp works for all the Miriuwung Gajerrong people who hold native title. Their main job is to make sure that the Ord Final Agreement is followed. This includes looking after the areas where people live in the community.
MG Corp was officially started in 2006. It helps the Miriuwung Gajerrong people plan and manage their traditional lands. This ensures their culture and land are cared for.
Planning the Town's Future
Every town needs a plan for how it will grow and develop. Bell Springs has its own special plan called Bell Springs Layout Plan No. 1.
What is a Layout Plan?
A layout plan is like a map and a rulebook for a town. It shows where houses, roads, and other important buildings can be. It helps make sure the town grows in an organized way.
The Bell Springs Layout Plan No. 1 was created following rules from the state government. The community members themselves approved this plan on August 3, 2012. The Western Australian Planning Commission also approved it on February 12, 2013. You can find details about this plan on the Planning Western Australia website.
