Isabella Theresa "Belle" Golding (born November 25, 1864 – died December 11, 1940) was an amazing Australian woman. She worked hard for women's rights and for fair treatment of workers. She was a suffragist, meaning she fought for women to have the right to vote. She was also a labour activist, which means she worked to improve conditions for people in their jobs.

Belle Golding was born in Tambaroora, New South Wales. Her father, Joseph Golding, was a gold-miner from Ireland. Her mother, Ann, was from Scotland. Belle had two sisters, Annie Mackenzie Golding and Kate Dwyer.

In 1893, Belle and her sisters joined a group called the Womanhood Suffrage League of New South Wales. This group worked to get women the right to vote. Later, in 1904, they started their own group called the Women's Progressive Association.

Belle's Work to Help Others

In May 1900, Belle Golding made history. She became the first female inspector of public schools in Australia. This was a very important job.

Belle used her job to help women. She wrote about health and work problems that women faced. She cared deeply about making life better for them.

Later, a new law called the Wage Arbitration Act was passed. Because of this law, Belle became an industrial inspector. She was the first woman to lead a Wage Board. This board helped settle disagreements about pay and working conditions.

In this role, Belle helped solve a big problem. It was a dispute between fruit sellers and candy shop workers. She settled the issue in just seven and a half hours. The agreement she helped create lasted for its full term.

Belle Golding also helped start the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Australia. This group works to protect animals from harm.

Her Lasting Impact

Belle Golding retired in 1927 because she was not well. She passed away on December 11, 1940, at the age of 76. She died in Annandale, New South Wales.

Today, Belle Golding is remembered for her important work. A place in Canberra, Australia, is named Golding Place. It honors both Belle and her sister, Annie Mackenzie Golding.
