Ben Spivak (born January 4, 1983) is a Canadian singer and musician. He is best known as the bassist and a singer for the pop-reggae band Magic!. Ben has also played with many other musicians, including the Canadian hip hop group K-Os, the Julian Taylor Band, and Alyssa Reid. Today, Ben Spivak lives in Los Angeles, California.
Early Life and Music
Ben Spivak was born in Toronto, Canada, on January 4, 1983. He started playing the piano when he was four years old and the guitar when he was nine. In junior high, he also learned to play the cello and the upright bass.
He later studied music at Humber College in Toronto. There, he focused on playing the bass guitar. While at Humber, Ben and his friends Rory Sills and Ben Weigensberg formed a band called Cavern. They wrote their own songs, recorded a few tracks, and performed around Ontario. Ben also started getting hired to play music with other artists, like Liam Titcomb, Mudmen, and country artist Johnny Reid.
Touring with K-Os
Ben toured for two years with the Canadian hip hop artist K-Os. They performed before the band Gym Class Heroes on their 2007 tour. The group even appeared on the famous David Letterman Show on February 20, 2007.
In 2007, Ben's band was part of the Warped Tour, a big music festival. The next year, in 2008, they also played at the Good Vibrations music festival in Australia.
Julian Taylor Band
In 2009, Ben Spivak helped start the Julian Taylor Band. The band recorded an album called "Hey Hey Two Two," which featured live cover songs. Before Ben moved to Los Angeles, he recorded bass parts for another album called "Tech Noir," which came out in 2014.
Solo Music
In 2010, Ben Spivak released his own solo album. It had ten songs that he wrote himself. On this album, Ben played most of the instruments, including the guitar, bass, piano, keyboards, and organs.
Magic!
Ben Spivak is the bassist and a supporting singer for the pop-reggae band Magic!. The band started when the lead singer, Nasri, met singer-songwriter Mark "Pelli" Pellizzer. They quickly realized they had a great musical connection.
When Ben Spivak moved to Los Angeles in 2013, he met Mark and was asked to join the band as their bass player. The group's song, 'Rude', became a huge hit and reached number one on the Billboard Top 100 chart. Magic! has toured with popular bands like Maroon 5 and has also performed before artists such as Dirty Heads.
