Benedict XIII is a name used by two important figures in the history of the Catholic Church. One was a recognized Pope, and the other was an "antipope" during a time when there were multiple people claiming to be the true Pope.
Pope Benedict XIII (1649–1730)
Pope Benedict XIII was born Pietro Francesco Orsini in 1649. He came from a noble family in Italy. Despite his family's wealth, he chose a simple life and became a Dominican friar.
He was known for his deep faith and humble nature. He didn't seek power and was actually quite reluctant to become Pope. When he was elected in 1724, he took the name Benedict XIII.
During his time as Pope, from 1724 to 1730, he focused on spiritual matters. He worked to improve the lives of priests and encouraged people to live more religious lives. He also canonized (declared saints) several important figures. He was known for his simple lifestyle, often wearing his old friar's habit even as Pope.
Antipope Benedict XIII (1328–1423)
Antipope Benedict XIII was born Pedro de Luna in 1328 in Spain. He was a highly educated and influential cardinal.
He became a central figure during a confusing period in Church history called the Western Schism. This was a time when there were two, and sometimes even three, different people claiming to be the true Pope. Each had their own group of supporters and lived in different places.
Pedro de Luna was elected Pope by a group of cardinals in Avignon, France, in 1394. He took the name Benedict XIII. However, he was not recognized by everyone, especially those who supported the Pope in Rome. This is why he is known as an "antipope" – someone who claims the title of Pope but is not officially recognized by the Church today.
He held onto his claim for many years, even after efforts were made to end the schism. He died in 1423, still believing he was the rightful Pope. The Western Schism finally ended a few years later, bringing unity back to the Church.
