The Benito Juarez sculptures honor a very important leader. Benito Juárez was a president of Mexico from 1858 to 1872. These two sculptures were created by an artist named Julian Martinez.
One sculpture is a full-length statue. It stands in Chicago, in the U.S. state of Illinois. The other is a "bust," which means it shows only the head and shoulders. This bust is located in Hermann Park's McGovern Centennial Gardens in Houston, Texas. The statue in Chicago replaced an earlier bust of Juarez.
The Chicago Statue
The full-length statue of Benito Juarez in Chicago is very tall. It stands 16 feet high. You can find it in the Plaza of the Americas. This plaza is along Michigan Avenue, just north of the famous Wrigley Building.
This impressive statue was a gift to the city of Chicago. It was donated by the counsel general of Mexico in February 1999. Before this large statue, a smaller bust of Juarez was in its place. That bust had been given by the Mexican President in 1977.
The Houston Bust

In Houston, the bronze bust of Benito Juarez is outdoors. It is located in Hermann Park's McGovern Centennial Gardens. This sculpture was given to the City of Houston in 1985. It was a gift from Pemex, an important Mexican company. They donated it on behalf of the people of Mexico.
