Bentley Hall is a historic landmark. It is located in Meadville, Pennsylvania. This building is part of the Allegheny College campus. It was built a long time ago, between 1820 and 1835. That makes it almost 200 years old!
A Look at Its Design
Bentley Hall has a special design. It is made from brick and stone. The main part of the building is three stories tall. It is about 60 feet wide. On each side, there are two-story wings. These wings are about 30 feet wide. The building shows two styles of architecture. The center part is in the Federal style. The wings are in the Greek Revival style. On top of the building, there is a cool, small dome. This is called a cupola.
Why is Bentley Hall Special?
Bentley Hall holds a very important place at Allegheny College. It was the first building ever constructed on the campus. For many years, it was the only building. Another building, Ruter Hall, was not built until 1853. This means Bentley Hall was the main spot for students and classes for a long time.
Honoring a Helper
The building is named after a person named Rev. William Bentley. He was an early supporter of the college. He helped the college a lot when it was first starting. Naming the building after him was a way to say thank you for his help.
