Discovering Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park

The park officially started on January 28, 1944. A family named Bentsen, including Lloyd M. Bentsen Sr. and his wife Edna Ruth, along with Elmer and Marie Bentsen, gave 586 acres of land. They wanted to create a protected home for plants and animals. Today, the park is even larger, covering 764 acres.

A Haven for Birds and Butterflies

Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is super famous for watching birds and butterflies. In 2004, it became the main spot for the World Birding Center. This meant some changes happened at the park. To protect the wildlife, cars are no longer allowed inside. Also, RV camping is not permitted anymore.

The World Birding Center has nine different locations in South Texas. These places include the Edinburg Scenic Wetlands and Estero Llano Grande State Park. They all work together to protect birds and their habitats.

Amazing Wildlife to Spot

More than 325 different kinds of birds have been seen at Bentsen Park. That's a lot of birds! You might spot colorful orioles or many other unique species. The park is also a favorite place for people who love butterflies. Over 250 different types of butterflies have been recorded here. Next to the park, you'll find the National Butterfly Center. This center is run by the North American Butterfly Association.

The park is open all year round, so you can visit any time! There is a small fee to enter the park. Since cars aren't allowed inside, a park tram is available to take you around. This makes it easy to explore.
