About Bernard Ashley

Bernard Ashley was born in Woolwich, a part of south London. After serving in the RAF, he trained to be a teacher. He went to Trent Park College for his training.

He taught for thirty years, mostly as a headteacher. His schools were in south and east London. These experiences gave him many ideas for his stories. He has received special honorary doctorates from the University of Greenwich and the University of Leicester. These are high honors for his work.

Bernard Ashley now works full-time as a writer. His children's books often show real-life situations. They help young readers understand and care about people who are struggling. His stories often take place in cities. These places might have problems like poverty or crime. Some of his books are set during wartime. Examples include Shadow of the Zeppelin (2014) and Dead End Kids (2015). His novel "Does She Dare?" (2017) is about a young feminist hero in 1911.
