Bernard Commons (born May 15, 1913 – died April 19, 1965) was an important Irish politician. He was also a farmer. He worked hard to represent the people of Ireland in their government.
Bernard Commons first tried to become a politician in the general elections of 1943 and 1944, but he didn't win those times. However, he didn't give up! He was later elected to Dáil Éireann, which is like the main parliament or law-making body in Ireland. He became a Teachta Dála (TD), which is what members of Dáil Éireann are called.

Bernard Commons' Political Journey
Becoming a TD for Mayo South
Bernard Commons was elected as a TD for the Mayo South area in a special election called a by-election. This happened on December 4, 1945. A by-election is held when a politician leaves their job before the next general election. In this case, the previous TD, Micheál Clery, got a new job as a County Registrar in Dublin.
Bernard Commons was part of a political party called Clann na Talmhan. This party mainly represented farmers and people living in rural areas.
Serving in the Dáil and Seanad
After his first win, Bernard Commons was elected again in the 1948 general election. This showed that people trusted him to represent them. However, he lost his seat in the 1951 general election.
Even though he wasn't in the Dáil anymore, he continued his work in politics. He was then elected to the Seanad Éireann, which is the second house of the Irish parliament. He was elected to the 7th Seanad as part of the Agricultural Panel, which means he represented people involved in farming.
He tried again to get back into the Dáil in the 1954 general election but wasn't successful. Still, he was elected to the 8th Seanad, continuing his service to the country. He finished his time in the Seanad after the 1957 election.
Working for Farmers' Rights
In the early 1940s, Bernard Commons was a strong voice for farmers in County Mayo. He was involved in movements that aimed to help farmers get fair access to land and better conditions. His dedication to these causes was so strong that he even spent some time in Sligo Prison because of his activism. After this, he went on to win his first seat in the Dáil, showing his commitment to the people he represented.
