Bernardino Fungai (born around 1460, died around 1516) was an Italian painter. He helped bridge the gap between older painting styles (late Gothic) and newer ones (early Renaissance) in the Sienese school. His paintings often had a traditional feel and were mostly about religious subjects.

Bernardino Fungai's full name was Bernardino Cristofano di Niccolò d'Antonio di Pietro da Fungaia. His family came from a small village near Siena called Fungaia.

In 1482, he was a student of another artist, Benvenuto di Giovanni. At that time, Fungai was helping to paint large wall murals, called frescoes, in the dome of the Siena Cathedral.

Later, in 1494, Fungai was asked to decorate special flags. These flags were painted with blue and gold colors. He also created a large painting for a church in Siena in 1512. This type of painting is called an altarpiece.

Bernardino Fungai's Artworks

Many paintings are believed to be by Bernardino Fungai. One important painting that proves his work is an altarpiece from 1512. It shows the Virgin and Child Enthroned with Saints. This painting is now in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena.

Fungai's style was influenced by older Sienese painters like Sassetta and Giovanni di Paolo. He also learned from artists of his time. These included Pietro Perugino, Luca Signorelli, and Bernardino Pinturicchio.

Most of Fungai's religious paintings are quite traditional. However, his few paintings on special wooden chests, called cassones, are very interesting. Also, the backgrounds in his larger religious paintings show his talent for telling stories.

You can see his skill in painting landscapes in his early work from 1495–97. This painting is called Stigmatisation of St Catherine. It shows a wide view of beautiful buildings, gentle hills, and tall trees. In the distance, there is a large sea with small boats.

Fungai often painted the main figures in his art as solid and formal. But the smaller figures in the background or at the bottom of the painting often look like they are dancing. They have flowing clothes, which is a common feature of his unique style.
