Berne is a small, quiet place in Crawford County, Iowa. It is known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.
A Look Back: Berne's History
Berne was officially started in 1899. People decided to create this community and map out its streets and lots. This process is called "platting."
The community got its name from a famous city. It was named after Bern, the capital city of Switzerland.
Over the years, Berne has always been a very small place. In 1915, only 11 people lived there. By 1925, the population was even smaller, with just 6 residents. However, by 1940, the number of people living in Berne grew to 25.
