Bernhard Ycart facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Bernar, Bernardus or Bernhard Ycart (also known as Hycart, Hycaert, Icart, Ycaert) was a composer and music expert who lived in the late 1400s. He worked at the royal court of Aragon, which was located in Naples, Italy, at that time.

For a long time, people thought Ycart was from Flanders, a region in what is now Belgium and the Netherlands. Many musicians from that area traveled to Italy. However, newer research suggests he was probably from Catalonia or Aragon, regions in Spain.

Who Was Bernhard Ycart?

Bernhard Ycart was active during the late 15th century. This means he was working and creating music around the 1400s. He was known as a composer, someone who writes music, and a theorist, meaning he also studied and wrote about music rules and ideas.

He worked for the Aragonese court in Naples. A "court" was like a royal household, where kings and queens lived and had many people working for them, including artists and musicians. Naples was an important city in Italy, and the Kingdom of Aragon ruled it at that time.

His Music

Bernhard Ycart didn't have a huge number of musical pieces that survived, but the ones we have are important. His works include:

  • Three Magnificats: A Magnificat is a special song of praise often sung in church services.
  • A Gloria and a Kyrie: These are also parts of church music, usually from a Mass.
  • Three Lamentaciones: These are sad songs, often sung during Holy Week before Easter.
  • A motet: A motet is a type of choral music, usually sacred. His motet is called "O princeps Pilate."
  • A French chanson: A chanson is a French song, often about love. His is called "Non toches a moy."

These pieces help us understand the music of the late 1400s. They show us the styles and types of music that were popular in royal courts and churches during that time.

Where His Music Was Found

Ycart's surviving works were found in different old music collections:

  • Codex Faenza: This is an important collection of early music. It contains his three Magnificats, Gloria, and Kyrie.
  • Naples collections: His three Lamentaciones were found in Naples, where he worked.
  • Cancionero de Montecassino: This is another collection of songs, where his motet "O princeps Pilate" was preserved.

These old books and collections are like treasure chests for music historians. They help us learn about composers and music from hundreds of years ago.
