Bertha of Rouergue facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Bertha was an important noblewoman who lived in the 11th century. She was known as the Countess of Rouergue and Gévaudan. These were territories in what is now France. Bertha became a ruler in 1054 and ruled until her death sometime between 1063 and 1065.

Who Was Bertha?

Bertha was the daughter of another important ruler named Hugh of Rouergue. Her mother was Fides. Bertha was her parents' only child, which meant she was their heiress. This meant she would inherit all their lands and titles when they were gone. We don't know exactly when Bertha was born.

Her Life and Rule

Before the year 1051, Bertha married a man named Robert II of Auvergne. However, they did not have any children together. This is important because it affected who would inherit her lands after she died.

As Countess, Bertha ruled over several important areas. These included Rouergue and Gévaudan, but also other places like Narbonne, Agde, Béziers, and Uzès. These were all significant regions in medieval France.

What Happened After Bertha's Death?

When Bertha died, she had no children to inherit her titles and lands. Because of this, her counties and all the territories she ruled went to a distant relative. This relative was William IV of Toulouse. He became the new ruler of these lands after Bertha.
