Early Life and Learning
Bev Clarno was born in Langlois, Oregon. This town is located on the coast of Oregon. She later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. She got this degree from Marylhurst University.
Starting in Oregon Politics
Clarno began her political career in 1989. She was elected to the Oregon House of Representatives. This group helps make laws for the state. In 1995, she became the Speaker of the House. This means she was the leader of the House of Representatives. She was the Speaker until 1997. After that, she ran for a different state job. She tried to become the Oregon State Treasurer. However, she did not win that election.
Serving in the State Senate
In 2000, Clarno was elected to the Oregon State Senate. This is another important part of Oregon's lawmaking body. She served one term in the Senate. In 2003, she left her state job. She took a new position with the George W. Bush administration. This was the federal government led by President George W. Bush. She worked for the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
Becoming Secretary of State
In 2019, Oregon's Governor, Kate Brown, chose Clarno for a big role. Governor Brown appointed her as the Oregon Secretary of State. This happened after the previous Secretary of State, Dennis Richardson, passed away. The Governor wanted someone who would focus on the job. She also wanted someone who would not run for election later. Clarno agreed to these conditions.
In Oregon, there is no Lieutenant Governor. So, the Secretary of State is next in line to become Governor. However, because Clarno was appointed, she could not become Governor. The next person in line was the Oregon State Treasurer, Tobias Read. Clarno served as Secretary of State until January 4, 2021. Then, Shemia Fagan took over the office.
