Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Beverlei Brown is a talented British singer known for her amazing R&B and soul music. She learned to sing from her mother, who was a choir singer at their church in Birmingham, England. Beverlei joined the choir when she was old enough and even became its leader!

Her powerful voice quickly got noticed. She sang a solo with the famous gospel group the Clark Sisters at their concert in the UK. This led to a big opportunity with the band Fine Young Cannibals. They needed gospel singers for a new album, and Beverlei joined them. The recording sessions went so well that the band got a record deal, and Beverlei got to go on their worldwide tour!

Building a Music Career

After her tour, Beverlei returned to Birmingham to finish school. She worked as a receptionist for a law office for a while. But music soon called her back! She joined singer Ruby Turner on a two-year tour, which helped her reputation grow even more.

Soon, many other famous artists wanted to work with Beverlei. She sang with groups and musicians like Simply Red, Snap!, Joe Cocker, the Brand New Heavies, Babyface, and Chaka Khan.

First Album and Success

In 1996, Beverlei got the chance to record her own song called "On and On." It became very popular in UK clubs! She recorded a whole album, but it wasn't released because the record company closed down.

Two years later, Dome Records offered her a deal. She moved to London and spent many hours in the studio. Beverlei even helped write six songs on her first album, Next to You. One special song, "Could Be You," was a duet recorded with fellow artist Dennis Taylor. This album was a huge hit in Japan, and the UK version had three extra songs!

Music in the 2000s

In the early 2000s, Beverlei released more songs like "Part Time Lover," "Tell Me," and "Somebody Knows How You Feel." These songs were played on popular radio shows, including Trevor Nelson's Rhythm Nation on BBC Radio 1.

Beverlei also sang with Justin Hawkins on two songs, "Ashamed" and "Cocktails," for his band Hot Leg's album Red Light Fever. In 2003, she was the lead singer on the Full Flava's song "Love Holds No Limit" from their album Colour of My Soul.

In 2007, Beverlei and Justin Hawkins sang a duet called "Making Your Mind Up." They performed it on the BBC, hoping to represent the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007. Beverlei continues to work on new music with talented people like Justin Hawkins and Alan Glass.
