Political Career Highlights
Serving in the Oregon House
Clarno began her political career in the Oregon House of Representatives in 1989. The House of Representatives is where laws are debated and voted on. In 1995, she became the Speaker of the House. The Speaker is the leader of the House and helps guide its work. She served in the House until 1996. After that, she decided to run for Oregon State Treasurer, but she did not win that election.
Moving to the Oregon State Senate
In 2000, Clarno was elected to the Oregon State Senate. The State Senate is another part of the state's lawmaking body. She served one term there. In 2003, she left the Senate to take a job with the United States government. She worked as a regional representative for the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
Becoming Oregon's Secretary of State
In 2019, Governor Kate Brown chose Bev Clarno to become the Oregon Secretary of State. This happened after the previous Secretary of State, Dennis Richardson, passed away. The Governor wanted someone who would focus on the job's daily tasks and not run for election to a full term. Clarno agreed to this condition.
In Oregon, there is no Lieutenant Governor. The Secretary of State acts in a similar role and is usually next in line to become Governor if something happens to the current Governor. However, because Clarno was appointed to the role, she was not eligible to become Governor. This meant that the Oregon State Treasurer, Tobias Read, was next in line for Governor until Shemia Fagan took office in January 2021.
