Beverly Hope Atkinson (born December 9, 1935 – died December 11, 2001) was an American actress. She performed in plays, movies, and TV shows from 1968 to 1991. She was known for playing strong women who faced tough times.
Her Acting Journey
Atkinson studied acting with a famous teacher named Lee Strasberg in the 1960s. She later became part of the Actors Studio, a special place where actors train and work together.
After college, she started her acting career on stage in New York. She toured with theater groups like Café LaMama Theater and Theater West. She acted in plays such as The Skin of Our Teeth, Lysistrata, and The Blacks.
In the early 1970s, Beverly moved to Hollywood. She made a big impression in her very first movie role in The New Centurions (1972). She also had a role in the 1973 animated film Heavy Traffic. In this movie, she voiced an animated character named Carole and also played her in live-action scenes.
She began her TV career with smaller parts. But soon, she found more steady work playing memorable characters. She was especially known for playing strong, determined women. A notable role was on the TV show Hill Street Blues, where she appeared many times from 1984 to 1986. She also made a memorable appearance on the show Good Times as Savannah Morgan.
Beverly Hope Atkinson passed away from cancer in Los Angeles, California. She was 66 years old.
