Bexley is a small, unincorporated community. It is located in George County, Mississippi. Being "unincorporated" means it is not an official city or town. Instead, it is part of the larger county area.

A Look Back: Bexley's History

Before George County was formed, Bexley was part of Greene County. This shows how county lines can change over time.

Early Industry in Bexley

In 1901, the Diamond Lumber Company opened a large sawmill in Bexley. A sawmill is a place where logs are cut into lumber. This mill was very busy. It could cut about 50,000 feet (about 15,240 meters) of pine wood each day. The company also built a short railway line. This railway helped move the lumber from Bexley to other places. The sawmill closed its operations in 1918.

Bexley's Connections and Communication

Bexley was also a stop on the main railway line of the Illinois Central Railroad. This made it an important place for travel and trade. A post office served the community for many years. It operated under the name Bexley from 1900 until 1971. This allowed people to send and receive mail.

Education in Bexley

The Bexley School was open from 1913 to 1959. This school was special because it was one of the first "consolidated schools" in Mississippi. School consolidation happens when two or more smaller, rural schools combine. They join together to form one larger school. This often helps provide better resources for students.

Helping the Community: Public Services

The people of Bexley are served by their local fire department. This is the Bexley Volunteer Fire Department. Volunteers are people who help without getting paid. They work to keep the community safe from fires.

Bexley also has an important water system. It was the first rural water system in the United States. It received funding from the Farmers Home Administration. This organization helps people in rural areas. This water system helped bring clean water to homes in the countryside.
