Discovering Bidan's Past
The Bidan Community was first started around 1985. It was originally called Bedunburru. The first settlement was on lower ground, east of where it is today.
For a long time, the Nyikina people used to bring their children to the Bidan area. They would stay there during the dry season. However, the old camp would often get flooded when it rained a lot. Because of this, the community decided to move to higher ground. The current settlement, with stronger buildings, was built during the 1990s.
Understanding Native Title in Bidan
The land where Bidan is located is part of a special agreement. This agreement is called the Nyikina Mangala (WAD 6099/98) Indigenous land use agreement. An Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) is a voluntary agreement. It is made between Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people and other groups. These agreements are about how land and waters will be used and managed. They recognize the rights and interests of Indigenous people.
How Bidan is Managed
The Bidan community is managed by its own organization. This organization is called the Bidan Aboriginal Corporation. It used to be known as Bedunburru (Aboriginal Corporation). This group was officially set up on August 26, 1988. It operates under a law called the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006. This law helps Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups manage their own affairs.
Planning for Bidan's Future
Bidan has a special plan for its development. It is called Bidan Layout Plan No.1. This plan follows rules set by the State Planning Policy 3.2 Aboriginal Settlements. The community approved this plan on May 26, 2011. The Western Australian Planning Commission also approved it on September 29, 2011. This plan helps guide how buildings and services are set up in the community. You can find more details about this plan at Planning Western Australia.
