History of Billiluna

Billiluna became a permanent Aboriginal community around 1978. Before this, Aboriginal people lived at the Balgo Mission. They moved to the area known as Billiluna Station. A "station" is a very large farm, usually for raising cattle.

The land for Billiluna Station was once owned by a private company. But then, it was given to the Aboriginal Lands Trust. This is a group that helps manage land for Aboriginal people. After the land was transferred, people started building houses and schools in 1979. This helped make Billiluna a proper community.

How Billiluna is Run

The community of Billiluna is also known as Kururrungku and Mindibungu. It is managed by a group called the Mindibungu Aboriginal Corporation. This corporation was officially started in 1979.

The Mindibungu Aboriginal Corporation helps run things in the community. For example, they have been in charge of the Kurruungku Store since 1996. This store is important for the people living in Billiluna.
