Billingee: Sharing Culture Through Art
Billingee lived in the early 1900s. He worked with a writer named Daisy Bates. Together, they recorded information about the Ngumbarl language. This meant they wrote down words and stories from the Ngumbarl people.
Billingee also created a special book of drawings. These drawings showed the cultural practices of people from the Broome area. He made this book with Daisy Bates.
His Unique Drawing Book
This drawing book was very important. It was given to the Governor of Western Australia in 1907. It might be the first time an Aboriginal man from the Kimberley region showed his culture using European drawing styles.
A researcher named Cynthia Coyne believes Billingee made these drawings to proudly show his culture. He wanted to share his heritage with others.
Where Are His Drawings Now?
Billingee's special drawing book is now kept at the State Library of Western Australia. Libraries like this collect and preserve important historical items. This ensures that Billingee's work can be studied and appreciated for many years to come.
