A Church with a Long History

Birchcliffe Baptist Church has a rich history that spans centuries. It has seen different buildings and changes over time.

Early Beginnings in 1764

The first Birchcliffe Baptist Church was founded in 1764. This was a time when many new churches were starting. Daniel Taylor was an important leader in the Baptist community. He helped establish this church.

A New Church Forms in 1807

In 1807, some members left Birchcliffe Baptist Church. They were unhappy with the official ceremony to make a new minister, Henry Hollinrake. This group then started their own church. It was called Mount Zion Baptist Church.

Three Buildings on One Site

Over the years, three different church buildings have stood on the Birchcliffe site.

  • The first church was built in 1764.
  • The second church was built in 1825. It was much larger than the first. This building was taken down in 1933.
  • The third and current building opened on October 31, 1899. It was built a bit further down the hill. This building stopped being used for church services in the 1970s.

Birchcliffe Centre Today

Today, the building is known as the Birchcliffe Centre. It is a very important historical building. It is listed as Grade II, which means it is protected. Not much is left of the very first church buildings. Only a part of the old school building and the graveyard remain. The Birchcliffe Centre now serves the community in new ways.
