Birgit Aagard-Svendsen studied engineering at the Danmarks Ingeniørakademi, which is now part of the Technical University of Denmark. She finished her engineering degree in 1980. Later, in 1985, she also studied business administration at Handelshøjskolen in Copenhagen, which is now known as Copenhagen Business School.

Before she joined J. Lauritzen in 1998, Birgit worked in leadership roles at other companies. From 1996 to 1998, she worked at Tele Danmark, which was a large phone company. She also worked at Nordisk Film during the same time, which is a well-known film company.
