He was the drummer for their albums The Jester Race (1996) and Whoracle (1997). Later, in 1997, he switched to playing the guitar. He has been the main guitarist for In Flames ever since their album Colony (1999). He often shared guitar duties with another band member, Jesper Strömblad.

Other Music Projects
Before joining In Flames, Björn Gelotte was part of a band called Flesh of Sights. This was an earlier step in his music career.
He also works on a side project called All Ends. He writes songs for this band with his former In Flames bandmate, Jesper Strömblad. Björn's sister is one of the singers in All Ends. However, neither Björn nor Jesper play live with All Ends. Their main band, In Flames, has a very busy schedule.
Björn has also played guitar for other artists. He played on a song called "Self Versus Self" by the group Pendulum. His bandmates Anders Fridén and Peter Iwers also joined him on that track. He also played a guitar solo on "Letters From Neverend" for the band Avatar. And he played lead guitar for the song "Force of Hand" by Dark Tranquillity.
Björn Gelotte's Guitar Gear
Björn Gelotte uses specific guitars and equipment to create his sound. He often plays a Gibson Les Paul Custom guitar. He also has a special custom-made Les Paul. Both of these guitars have EMG 81 and EMG 85 pickups. These are special parts that help make the guitar sound powerful.
He uses equipment from Line 6, like the POD XT. For his strings, he uses custom Dunlop strings. He also uses Dunlop .88 MM Tortex picks.
In the early days of In Flames, Björn and Jesper Strömblad tuned their guitars to C standard. This is a specific way to tune a guitar. Later, for albums like Colony and Reroute to Remain, they started using Drop A# tuning for some songs. Since the album Soundtrack to Your Escape, In Flames has mostly used Drop A# tuning. On Reroute to Remain, they even used Drop G tuning for one song called "Transparent."
In 2015, the company Epiphone released a special guitar. It was a limited edition Björn Gelotte signature Les Paul Custom. This guitar has a mahogany body and neck. It also has an ebony fretboard with pearl block inlays. It has a shiny ebony finish and gold hardware. This special guitar also comes with a hard case. The headstock of the guitar has a cool design. It features a special version of the In Flames "jester head" logo.
