The black-lored parrot is a special type of parrot. It is also known as the Buru green parrot. This bird lives only on the Indonesian island of Buru. When an animal lives only in one place, it is called endemic.

This parrot is about 40 centimeters (16 inches) long. It has green feathers and black markings near its eyes, called lores. Its head has a pretty turquoise color. Male parrots have red beaks, while females have gray-brown beaks. The black-lored parrot sings with a high-pitched sound. Its song lasts longer than other similar parrots, like the great-billed parrot.

About the Black-Lored Parrot

The black-lored parrot is a very rare bird. It is hard to study because it is often active at night. This means it is a nocturnal bird. Sometimes, it might be active during the day too. People on Buru Island call it "kakatua ol’biru," which means "blue-headed parrot."

Where Do Black-Lored Parrots Live?

These parrots live mostly in the central, higher parts of Buru Island in Indonesia. They have been seen in places like Gunung Tagalago and Kunturun. These areas are high up, between 700 and 1100 meters (2,300–3,000 feet). They have also been seen in lower areas near the coast.

The black-lored parrot seems to prefer forests that are high up in the mountains. These forests are usually safe from logging. Logging is when trees are cut down for wood.

How Many Black-Lored Parrots Are There?

Scientists estimate there are about 1 to 19 black-lored parrots in every square kilometer (0.4 square miles). Because they are so rare and live in a small area, they are considered a vulnerable species. This means they are at risk of becoming endangered.

Protecting the Black-Lored Parrot

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed the black-lored parrot as vulnerable in 1994. This organization helps protect animals around the world.

To help protect these parrots, two special areas have been set aside on Buru Island. These are called Gunung Kapalat Mada and Waeapo. These protected areas help keep the parrot's home safe. Local people do not hunt or capture these birds very often. There was only one report of a parrot being sold in a market in 1998.

By protecting their forest homes, we can help ensure the black-lored parrot continues to thrive on Buru Island.
