Black Female Photographers facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Black Female Photographers (BFP) is a cool online group that brings together Black women who love taking pictures from all around the world. It helps them connect, share their amazing work, and make friends. BFP also works to help change how people see photography and who gets to be a photographer, making the industry more welcoming for everyone. This group started in 2008 and now has more than 5,000 members worldwide!

What is BFP?

BFP uses cameras and pictures to unite Black women photographers. For the last 15 years, BFP has hosted a special event called the National Black Female Photographers Day every year. This day brings photographers together for fun city photo tours and a networking lunch. It's a great chance for members to show leadership and help BFP be seen in communities everywhere.

BFP also holds a yearly event called the Vision Conference. This conference gives photographers helpful tools, ideas, and workshops to improve their skills. For example, the 2017 Vision Conference was in Dallas, Texas, and the 2018 conference was in Atlanta, Georgia.

Who Started BFP?

Kym Scott started Black Female Photographers in 2008. She wanted to create a small group where women could easily share their photos and ideas. The group quickly became very popular! It has grown into a large organization that covers many different types of photography.

Kym Scott gets help from NJ Stevenson, who is a main helper, and a team of volunteer photographers. Together, they organize local events across the United States. They also create magazines like the Melanin Lens Magazine, which comes out sometimes. Ms. Scott is especially good at a type of photography called fine-art photography, which is like making art with pictures. She also has special training in professional photography from the Center for Digital Imaging Arts at Boston University.
