Black Mesa Winery is a special place in Velarde, New Mexico. It started in 1992. This winery is famous for making many different kinds of New Mexican wine. They even have a unique red wine called Black Beauty that tastes like chocolate! In 2014, some of their wines won big awards at a competition called the Jefferson Cup. You can visit their tasting room in Velarde to try their wines.

The Story of Black Mesa Winery

The area where Black Mesa Winery is located, Velarde, used to be called La Joya. This Spanish name means "the jewel." People called it this because the land was considered some of the best for farming in old Santa Fe de Nuevo México.

Dr. Gerhard and Connie Anderson started Black Mesa Winery in 1992. In the year 2000, Jerry and Lynda Burd bought the winery. They are the current owners.

Lynda Burd is an artist. She designs all the cool labels you see on the wine bottles. Her artwork is also shown in the tasting room. She even teaches a fun art class there called "Art by the Glass."

Winning Wines: Black Mesa's Awards

Black Mesa Winery has won many important awards for its wines. Here are some of the top awards they received in 2014 at the 15th Jefferson Cup Invitational Wine Competition:

  • The 2011 Cosecha Ultima wine won the Jefferson Cup.
  • The 2011 Coyote wine received the Jefferson Cup Award of Merit.
  • Their 2011 New Mexico Cabernet Sauvignon also won a Jefferson Cup.
  • The 2012 Burd Vineyard Montepulciano was recognized as one of the top 95 wines in its category.
