Blanca de Gassó y Ortiz (born November 26, 1846 – died April 15, 1877) was a Spanish writer and poet from the 1800s. She wrote many poems and plays, and her work was published in popular magazines of her time.
About Blanca's Life
Blanca grew up in a home where her father, Jacinto Gassó, owned a store called "El Bazar del Globo." Her father was very protective of her. Even though he let her join literary groups and work as a writer, he also kept a close watch on her life.
People at the time described Blanca as a tall, thin, blonde, and beautiful young woman. However, her father often scared away anyone who wanted to marry her.
A very sad event happened in April 1877. Blanca's mother passed away on April 5. Then, on April 8, her father was involved in a tragic incident that led to Blanca being severely injured, and he also died. It was said that Blanca had fallen in love and wanted to marry, but her father was strongly against it.
Blanca was taken to the Hospital Universitario de la Princesa in Madrid. She was conscious for a few days. During this time, she married the person she loved while she was very ill. She also made her will, leaving all her belongings, and asked for her last religious rites. Blanca passed away on April 15, 1877, in Madrid.
Newspapers reported on this sad story and the death of "the talented poetess." After this tragic event, more people bought her books and poetry collections. However, as years passed, her work became less known.
Blanca's Writing Career
Blanca de Gassó y Ortiz published a yearly book called Almanaque de Salón (Salon Almanac) for several years. She also wrote for many magazines in Madrid. Some of these included La Lira, La Garnalda, La Moda Elegante, El Bazar, and El Correo de la Moda.
She was a member of important groups for writers and artists, like the Association of Spanish Writers and Artists. She also belonged to the Economic Society Matritense.
Blanca wrote many different kinds of works. She wrote poetry books such as Corona de la infancia: lecturas poéticas y canciones para niños (Crown of Childhood: Poetic Readings and Songs for Children) from 1867. She also wrote Cien cantares a los ojos (One Hundred Songs to the Eyes).
Besides poetry, Blanca wrote plays. These included a tribute to the Dos de mayo (Second of May) in 1873, and a comedy called El primer vuelo (The First Flight). She also wrote a tragedy titled Numancia.
