The Blanche River (which means White River in French) is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Mères River, which then joins the mighty St. Lawrence River. The Blanche River runs through two towns: La Durantaye and Saint-Vallier. These towns are in a region called Bellechasse, which is part of Chaudière-Appalaches in the province of Quebec.

Where the River Flows

The Blanche River starts in the village of La Durantaye. Its source is a spring located about 0.9 kilometers (0.56 miles) south of the village. It is also about 2.1 kilometers (1.3 miles) west of a lake called "Lac aux Canards."

The river mainly flows northeast through farm areas. It runs somewhat parallel to the Mères River, staying on its southeast side.

The River's Journey

The Blanche River travels for about 9.5 kilometers (5.9 miles). Here's how its journey is divided:

  • For 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles), it flows northeast, passing south of La Durantaye village.
  • Then, for 1.4 kilometers (0.87 miles), it continues northeast. It crosses the Canadian National train tracks and the 4th rang East road.
  • Next, it flows 1.0 kilometer (0.62 miles) northeast, reaching the border between La Durantaye and Saint-Vallier.
  • It then travels 2.6 kilometers (1.6 miles) northeast. Along this part, it collects water from the Corriveau brook, which comes from the south. It flows under the Highway 20 bridge.
  • Finally, for 2.1 kilometers (1.3 miles), it flows northeast. It picks up water from the Lac aux Canards Discharge, also coming from the south. This is where it meets the Mères River.

Where the River Ends

The Blanche River empties into the Mères River. This meeting point is very close to the "Montée de la Station" road bridge. It's located north of Highway 20, near exit 356, and south of the village of Saint-Vallier.

What's in a Name?

The name "Rivière Blanche" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is like a special committee that names places in Quebec.
