A Look Back: The Courthouse Story

Building a New County's Home

Bleckley County was created in 1912. When a new county is formed, it needs important buildings. So, a new county jail and courthouse were built the very next year. The Bleckley County Courthouse officially opened its doors on January 1, 1914. Since that day, it has always been the main courthouse for the county. This courthouse was built even before the city hall and city auditorium, which were finished in 1928.

Who Designed This Building?

The courthouse was designed by a talented architect named J.J. Baldwin. He worked for an architectural firm called Gayre & Baldwin. Mr. Baldwin designed eight courthouses in Georgia, and this one is one of them!

What Does "Classical Revival" Mean?

The building is designed in the Classical Revival style. This style looks back to the ancient Greek and Roman buildings for inspiration. Think of grand buildings with tall columns. The Bleckley County Courthouse is made of brick. It has striking white columns and stone details. One writer, Wilbur W. Caldwell, said the building is "pleasant and serviceable." This means it's nice to look at and works well. He also noted that by 1912, courthouse designs in Georgia were becoming simpler. They were less flashy than older buildings.
