Bob Dwyer (born on November 29, 1940) is a famous Australian rugby union coach. He is known for leading the Australian national team, the Wallabies, to win the Rugby World Cup in 1991.

Early Life and School Rugby

Bob Dwyer went to Sydney Boys High School and finished in 1957. While at school, he played rugby for the second team. He played alongside other future sports stars like George Taylforth and George Evans.

Coaching Australia

Before coaching the national team, Dwyer coached the Sydney club Randwick. He led them to win four Sydney championships.

He coached the Australian national team from 1982 to 1983, and then again from 1988 to 1995. His biggest achievement was coaching Australia to win the 1991 Rugby World Cup. This was a huge moment for Australian rugby.

Time with Leicester Tigers

After rugby became a professional sport in 1996, Dwyer moved to England to coach Leicester Tigers. The team quickly found success under him. In 1997, they reached the final of the Heineken Cup and won the Pilkington Cup.

However, Dwyer was known for being very strict with his players. This led to some disagreements, and he eventually left the club.

Leading Bristol Back Up

In 1998, Dwyer became the head coach for Bristol. The team had recently been moved down to a lower league. Under his coaching, Bristol quickly returned to the top league, the Premiership.

The next season, Bristol finished sixth in the Premiership. They almost qualified for the Heineken Cup. Dwyer left Bristol in 2000. He believed Bristol had the potential to be a top rugby city in England.

Return to Australia

In 2001, Bob Dwyer returned to Australia. He became the coach of the New South Wales Waratahs in the Super 12 competition. He led the Waratahs to their first semi-final in the competition in 2002.

He resigned in 2003 but continued to work with New South Wales rugby. He helped develop new players.

Awards and Achievements

Bob Dwyer has received many honors for his contributions to rugby.

In 1991, he was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. This recognized his great achievements in Australian sport.

In 2004, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). This award honored his services to rugby union.

In 2011, he was inducted into the IRB Hall of Fame. This is a special honor for people who have made a big impact on rugby worldwide. He was recognized along with other Rugby World Cup-winning coaches and captains.
