Bobino was a super popular Quebec French language children's TV show. It was made in Quebec, Canada, and shown on Radio Canada. This show ran for a very long time, from 1957 all the way to 1985!
The main characters were Bobino, a kind gentleman played by Guy Sanche, and his funny little sister, Bobinette. Bobinette was a puppet, and her voice was done by Paule Bayard and later by Christine Lamer. Many other characters were part of the show too. You never saw them, but they interacted with Bobino and Bobinette through sounds or visual clues.

The Story of Bobino
Bobino started in 1957. At first, the show was mostly made up on the spot, or unscripted. Guy Sanche, who played Bobino, created many imaginary friends. For example, there was Camério, who was like the camera itself. Camério would answer by nodding or shaking its "head." There was also Gustave, a noisy ghost. Gustave was accidentally created when a stage worker dropped keys during a live show!
New Characters and Writers
In 1959, Michel Cailloux joined the team. He started writing the show's stories, which Guy Sanche had written all by himself before. Michel Cailloux brought in some new and exciting characters over the years.
One of the most important new characters was Bobinette. She was Bobino's lively and sometimes mischievous little sister. Later, in 1980, a friend of Bobinette named Giovanni was also introduced.
Who Played Bobinette?
Bobinette was first brought to life by Paule Bayard. She controlled the puppet and did Bobinette's voice. However, Paule Bayard became very sick in 1973. So, Christine Lamer took over the role of Bobinette. She continued to play Bobinette until the show ended.
Why Bobino Ended
Radio-Canada decided to end Bobino in 1985. Many fans were upset and even signed petitions to keep the show going! However, Guy Sanche's health was not good, and he could no longer continue hosting the show.
What Was the Show Like?
The show was all about the fun interactions between Bobino and Bobinette. Bobinette often came up with clever plans to play pranks on her brother. But Bobino was smart too! He would often turn the tables and play a prank back on her.
Sometimes, Bobinette would get into trouble because of her own actions. Bobino would always help her out. He would also use these moments to teach her a lesson or a moral.
The live parts of the show were split into three sections. In between these sections, there were two animated cartoon shorts. This made the show a mix of live action and cartoons!
Music of Bobino
The main theme song for Bobino was called Double March. It was created by a composer known as Dwight Barker. Fun fact: Dwight Barker was actually a made-up name! It was used by two composers working together: Tommy Reilly and James Moody.
Beyond the TV Show
Bobino was so popular that Bobino and Bobinette also appeared in a comic strip! The comic strip was created by Norbert Fersen.
