Scientific classification

The shadowy web-footed salamander (Bolitoglossa sombra) is a type of salamander. It belongs to a group of salamanders called Plethodontidae, also known as "lungless salamanders." This means they breathe through their skin and the lining of their mouths, not with lungs!

This special salamander is found in Costa Rica in Central America. It might also live in Panama, a country next to Costa Rica.

Where Does It Live?

The shadowy web-footed salamander makes its home in wet, cool mountain forests. These forests are often called "subtropical" or "tropical moist montane forests." They are usually found at high elevations, where it's misty and damp. Salamanders need a lot of moisture to survive because of how they breathe.

Why Is It Threatened?

Sadly, the shadowy web-footed salamander is facing danger. Its biggest threat is habitat loss. This happens when the forests where it lives are cut down or changed by human activities. When their homes disappear, these salamanders have fewer places to live, find food, and reproduce. Protecting these unique forests is very important to help the shadowy web-footed salamander survive.
