Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Booth's Gin is a special kind of dry gin that was once very popular. It was first made a long time ago, around 1740, by a part of the old Booth family from Lincolnshire, England. After being unavailable for some years, this famous drink has recently been made again.

What is Booth's Gin?

Booth's Gin is a type of clear alcoholic drink known as a "dry gin." It was created in England and became well-known for its quality. For many years, it was a favorite drink for many people.

A Look at Its History

The Booth family started making this gin in the 1700s. The original place where it was made was called the Red Lion distillery in Clerkenwell, London. A distillery is a place where drinks like gin are made.

The Unique Bottles

Booth's Gin was easy to spot because it came in special bottles. These bottles had a unique six-sided (hexagonal) shape. The labels on the bottles showed a symbol of the Booth family, called a heraldic crest. This crest was like a special family badge.

A Royal Favorite

Booth's Gin was sometimes called the "gentleman's gin." It was said to be a favorite drink of important people. Both Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother reportedly enjoyed it. A famous English writer, Sir Kingsley Amis, also liked to mix Booth's Gin to make a drink called "pink gin."

Changes Over Time

Over the years, the company that owned Booth's Gin changed. By the early 2000s, the brand was owned by Diageo Spirits. At that time, the gin was only made in the United States. Production of Booth's Gin stopped completely in 2017.

The Brand's Return

In November 2018, the Booth's Gin brand was sold to a new company called the Sazerac Company. This company decided to bring Booth's Gin back! In 2022, Sazerac started making Booth's Finest Old Dry Gin again in the United Kingdom.
