Borden's Ice Cream Shoppe is a super old and famous ice cream parlor in Lafayette, Louisiana. It was built way back in 1940. Its main job was to sell yummy Borden ice creams.

For a long time, the shop was owned by the Levy family. In 1981, Flora Levy, who owned it then, passed away. She left the ice cream shop to the University of Louisiana Lafayette's Foundation. The Foundation then rented the building to the manager who kept the shop running.

In May 2009, the Foundation sold the store. A local health club owner named Red Lerille bought it. He wanted to make sure this special local place stayed open in Lafayette. He even plans to make some small changes, like adding a drive-through window and outdoor seating. Red's daughter, Kackie Lerille, will help manage the store.

Red Lerille said he loves "mom-and-pop" businesses like this one. He mentioned that this Borden's is actually the very last one of its kind in the whole U.S. He wants to bring it back to how it used to be. Ella Mae Meaux, who worked at the parlor for 48 years, said that families have been coming to Borden's for generations. She was happy the Lerilles bought it, so families can keep enjoying it for many more years.

How the Business Was Run

Before the Lerille family bought it, Borden's was managed by Wayne Tucker. The business rented the building from the University of Louisiana Lafayette Foundation. The money from the rent helped pay for something called the Flora Levy Lecture Series at the university. This lecture series brings important speakers to the school.

Now, the money from selling the building will also go into a special fund. This fund will continue to support the Flora Levy Lecture Series. So, even though the ownership changed, the shop still helps the university.
