Borghild Holmsen (born October 22, 1865 – died December 4, 1938) was a talented Norwegian musician. She was a skilled pianist, a thoughtful music critic, and a creative composer. She played an important role in the music world of her time.
Early Life and Music Studies
Borghild Holmsen was born in Kråkstad, Norway. This area is now known as Ski. When she was seven years old, her family moved to Christiania. Today, Christiania is called Oslo.
Borghild began her music journey early. She studied piano with famous teachers. These included Agathe Backer-Grøndahl and Otto Winter-Hjelm. To further her skills, she traveled to Germany. There, she studied with Carl Reinecke and Salomon Jadassohn in Leipzig. She also learned from Albert Becker in Berlin. These studies helped her become a very accomplished musician.
A Life in Music
Borghild Holmsen made her first public performance in 1890. This important debut concert took place in Christiania. After her successful debut, she became a concert pianist. She toured widely, performing in many parts of Europe and the United States.
Later, Borghild decided to stop her concert tours. She then became a dedicated teacher. She taught at the Bergen Music Conservatory. One of her well-known students there was Harald Sæverud. Besides teaching, she also wrote about music. She worked as a music critic for newspapers. These included Bergens Aftenblad and Bergens Arbeiderblad. She shared her thoughts on music with many readers.
