Rubus boyntonii, also known as Boynton's dewberry, is a special kind of flowering plant that belongs to the rose family. It's quite rare and grows only in a few places in the eastern United States, specifically in Virginia and North Carolina.

What is Boynton's Dewberry?

Boynton's dewberry is a plant that's part of the Rubus group. This group includes many plants you might know, like blackberries and raspberries. It was first officially described in 1903 by a scientist named William Willard Ashe.

Where Does It Grow?

This rare plant is found only in two states in the United States:

It prefers certain types of environments in these areas, making it a plant with a very limited natural home.

Why is it Special?

Scientists find the Rubus group of plants very interesting because their genetics (how their traits are passed down) are quite complicated. This makes it tricky for experts to figure out exactly which plants should be called separate species.

  • Hard to Classify: Because of its complex genetics, it's sometimes hard to tell Rubus boyntonii apart from other similar plants.
  • Rare and Unique: Like many plants in the Rubus family, Boynton's dewberry is rare and only grows in a small area.
  • Possible Hybrid: Some studies suggest that Rubus boyntonii might be a "hybrid." This means it could have formed naturally by mixing the traits of two other Rubus plants: R. allegheniensis and R. flagellaris.

Scientists are still studying plants like Boynton's dewberry to understand them better and make sure they are correctly named and grouped.
