The outcrop kurrajong, also known as Brachychiton collinus, is a special kind of small tree. It can lose its leaves, which means it's a deciduous tree. This amazing tree grows in some of the toughest places in Australia. It handles very hot weather and tricky rain patterns.

About the Outcrop Kurrajong

This small tree is often found in North-West Queensland, Australia. You can see it between the towns of Cloncurry and Mount Isa. This area is a savannah zone, which means it's a type of grassland with scattered trees.

Surviving Tough Weather

The weather in this part of Queensland is very extreme. Summer temperatures can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius! The rain is also very unpredictable. Sometimes, a whole year's worth of rain (about 50 centimeters) can fall in just one night. Despite these challenges, the outcrop kurrajong thrives.

Why It Likes Rocks

The outcrop kurrajong usually grows on rocky outcrops. These are areas with lots of bare rocks, like small hills or rocky patches. Not many other plants, like grasses or small bushes, can survive in these spots. The tree probably prefers these rocky places because it doesn't like fire. Most brachychiton trees, including this one, cannot survive a strong bushfire or grass fire. Growing on bare rocks helps protect them from flames.
