The Bradford Mela is a big, fun festival that celebrates South Asian culture. It was the first event of its kind in Europe! This free festival happens once a year in Bradford City Park. It is part of the larger Bradford Festival.
The word "Mela" comes from an old Indian language called Sanskrit. It means "a gathering" or "to meet." In the UK, Melas help different communities come together. They celebrate and share their unique cultures.
At the Mela, you can find many exciting things to do. There are activities just for kids, like face painting. You can also see cool exhibitions and enjoy funfair rides. There are interactive sports and amazing street theatre shows. You will hear lots of music and see dance performances on stage. Many singers perform too. You can also find crafts, costume making, and stalls selling delicious food.
History of the Bradford Mela
The very first Bradford Mela took place in 1988. It was held in fields behind the University. This event quickly grew to become the largest of its kind in the UK and Europe.
Early Locations
After 1988, the Mela moved to Lister Park in Bradford. It stayed there until 1997. However, in 1994, it was held in Bowling Park instead. From 1998 to 2012, the Mela was held in Peel Park.
Changes Over Time
Sometimes, the Mela had to be cancelled. For example, in 2007 and 2012, it was called off. This was due to bad weather and poor ground conditions. The Mela used to last for two days over a weekend. More than 100,000 people would typically visit.
In 2013, the Mela changed again. It was reduced to just one day. It also moved to its current home, Bradford City Park. Now, it is an important part of the bigger Bradford Festival.
