The Bradford Mela is a big festival that celebrates South Asian culture. It was actually the first event of its kind in Europe! This festival is free to attend and happens once a year in Bradford City Park. It's a special part of the larger Bradford Festival.
The word "Mela" comes from an old Indian language called Sanskrit. It means 'a gathering' or 'to meet'. In the UK, Melas are a chance for different communities to come together. They celebrate and share their cultures with everyone.
At the Bradford Mela, there's always lots to do! You can find fun activities for kids, like face painting. There are also exhibitions, exciting funfair rides, and interactive sports. You might see visual arts, street theatre, and live music and dance performances. Singers often perform on stage, and you can find crafts and costume-making activities. Many stalls sell delicious food, and there are often special tents called marquees.

History of the Bradford Mela
When Did the Mela Start?
The very first Bradford Mela took place in 1988. It was held in some fields behind the University. This event quickly became the largest of its kind in both the UK and Europe.
Where Has the Mela Been Held?
After 1988, the Mela moved to Lister Park in Bradford. It stayed there until 1997. However, in 1994, it was held in Bowling Park instead.
From 1998 to 2012, the Mela's home was Peel Park. But in 2007 and 2012, the Mela had to be cancelled. This was because of bad weather and muddy ground conditions.
How Has the Mela Changed?
The Mela used to happen over two days during a weekend. More than 100,000 people would typically visit! Since 2013, the Mela has been a one-day event. It also moved to Bradford City Park, where it is now part of the bigger Bradford Festival. The last Mela mentioned in records was on June 14, 2015.
