History of Brampton City Hall
From Park to City Building
Before Brampton City Hall was built, this spot was a park called Memorial Park. This park was home to the Brampton Cenotaph, a special monument honoring soldiers. The Cenotaph was officially opened in 1928 by Lord Willingdon, who was the Governor General of Canada at the time.
Later, the park's name changed to Ken Whillans Square. Today, there's a different park at South Fletcher's Sportsplex that uses the name Memorial Park.
Building the Current City Hall
A bus terminal used to be on part of the site where City Hall now stands. This terminal closed before 1989 to make way for the new building. Bus services have since moved to the Downtown Transit Centre.
The current City Hall building has six floors. It was designed by Robert J. Posliff Architect Inc. Inzola Construction finished building it in 1991. The building has a unique bell tower and a curved entrance with tall columns. A two-story addition was also built onto the original structure.
The Southwest Quadrant Renewal Plan
In 2014, a new nine-story tower opened at 41 George Street. This tower is part of a bigger project called the Southwest Quadrant Renewal Plan. It is connected to the main City Hall building by a glass walkway named Heritage Way.
This new tower provides more space for city staff to work. It also includes rooms for community events and retail shops. To build this tower, an old four-story commercial building and a parking lot had to be taken down. The new tower also has a working clock.
Past Homes of Brampton's City Council
Brampton's city council has met in several different buildings over the years before moving to the current City Hall.
- Brampton's Old Fire Hall (built 1854): Located at 2 Chapel Street, this building was first a market hall. By 1860, the second floor was used for village council meetings. The first meeting of Brampton Town Council happened here in 1874. Council met here until 1911.
- Heggie Block (built 1860): From 1911 to 1965, town meetings were held at 8 Main Street South.
- Queen's Square Building (completed 1965): Council meetings took place here at 24 Queen Street East from 1965 to 1974. This building was later updated in 2001 and is now called the Market Square Business Centre.
- Chinguacousy Civic Centre (opened 1972): Located at 150 Central Park Drive, this center is also home to the Lester B. Pearson Theatre. Brampton City Council met here from 1974 until 1991.
- Brampton City Hall (since 1991): The current City Hall at 2 Wellington Street West has been the home for city council meetings since 1991.
