Turning Professional

Brandon Ríos became a professional boxer and signed with Bob Arum's company, Top Rank. On October 17, 2009, he won a fight against Manuel Pérez. The referee stopped the fight in the 7th round because Pérez couldn't continue. This is called a TKO (Technical Knockout) victory.

Later, Brandon Ríos fought Anthony Peterson in an important match. Ríos won this fight when Peterson was disqualified for hitting him below the belt too many times. Before this, Ríos was ahead on all the judges' scorecards.

Becoming a Champion

On February 26, 2011, Brandon Ríos faced Miguel Acosta for the WBA World Lightweight Championship. Ríos won the fight in the 10th round by TKO. This made him the new WBA regular Lightweight champion.

First Title Defense

Brandon's first time defending his title was against Urbano Antillón. Ríos won this fight by KO (Knockout) in the third round. This showed he was a strong champion.

Fighting as a Welterweight

Brandon Ríos then moved up to the Welterweight division, an even heavier weight class.

Big Fight Against Manny Pacquiao

On November 23, 2013, Ríos fought the famous boxer Manny Pacquiao in Macau. This was a very big fight for Ríos, and he earned the most money in his career for it. Pacquiao won the 12-round match easily, taking the WBO International Welterweight title.

Third Fight with Mike Alvarado

After another win, Ríos fought Mike Alvarado for a third time on January 24, 2015. This fight was in Alvarado's hometown. Ríos was very strong and punished Alvarado for three rounds. The referee stopped the fight before the fourth round began, giving Ríos the win.

Challenging for a World Title Again

On November 7, 2015, Ríos fought Timothy Bradley for the WBO Welterweight title. Ríos lost this fight in the 9th round. It was the first time in his professional career that he was stopped by an opponent. After the fight, Ríos announced he was retiring from boxing.
