Brandy Cove, also known by its Welsh name Bae gîl, is a small, quiet beach located on the beautiful Gower Peninsula in south Wales. It's a bit harder to reach than its neighbor, Caswell Bay, which is just to the east. The beach sits at the end of a valley that stretches from Bishopston village.

Discovering Brandy Cove Beach

Getting to Brandy Cove

You can reach Brandy Cove by following a footpath from Bishopston village. Another way is to walk from Caswell Bay. This path goes over some steep cliffs, so it can be a bit of a climb!

Why is it Called Brandy Cove?

The name "Brandy Cove" comes from old stories. People say that a long time ago, in the 1700s, smugglers used this hidden bay. They would secretly bring in goods like tobacco and drinks. This was a way to avoid paying taxes on them.

What Makes the Beach Special?

The sandy parts of Brandy Cove beach only appear when the tide is low. When the water goes out, you can see more of the sand.

Brandy Cove is also a very interesting place for geology. It's known as a "Pleistocene raised beach." This means the land here shows signs that the sea level was once much higher. In fact, it used to be about thirty feet higher than it is today! This happened during the Ice Age, a very long time ago.

Legends of the Cove

Like many old places, Brandy Cove has its own local legends. One popular story is about a witch. People say she lived in the caves near the beach. These tales add a mysterious touch to the quiet cove.
