Branislava Peruničić-Draženović was a brilliant scientist and engineer from Bosnia. She was born on July 10, 1936, and passed away on March 17, 2025. She was a respected professor of Control Engineering at the University of Sarajevo. In 1986, she became a member of the important Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Early Life and Education
Branislava Peruničić-Draženović studied engineering at the University of Belgrade. She earned her first degree in 1960. Later, she completed her master's degree in 1966. During these years, she also worked as a teacher in the Electrical Engineering department.
She then moved to the University of Sarajevo for her advanced studies. She finished her doctoral degree in 1971. While studying, she also worked at a research institute in Moscow. After completing her doctorate, she quickly became an assistant professor. Branislava Peruničić-Draženović passed away at the age of 88.
Career and Research
Alongside her studies, Branislava Peruničić-Draženović worked as a project leader at a company called Energoinvest until 1970. She became a full professor at the University of Sarajevo in 1976. Her work focused on Control engineering, which is about designing systems that can manage and regulate other systems. Think of it like a thermostat controlling a heater or a cruise control system in a car.
In 1981, she was a Fulbright visiting scholar. This allowed her to visit and work at universities in the United States. She held visiting positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and Texas A&M University. Her research explored special ways to control systems, including "variable structure control" and "sliding mode control." These are advanced methods for making systems work smoothly and efficiently.
In 1993, Professor Peruničić-Draženović joined Lamar University in the United States. She worked there as a professor in the College of Engineering. In 2009, she was chosen as the vice president of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina. She also served on the University of Sarajevo's Council for Science and Arts.
