Breakfast Serials was a fun TV show for kids that aired on BBC1 in 1990. Each episode was about 25 minutes long. It was an anthology series, which means it showed different short stories or segments in each episode.

What Was Breakfast Serials About?

This show was made up of many short segments. These segments covered different types of stories. Some were funny dialogue comedies, like Cheapo TV. Others were dramas, such as Runners and NiceChap. There were also stand-up comedy bits called Zounds and narrative stories known as Single Tales.

Meet the Kitchen Crew

Before each short story, you would see a fun chat. This chat was between three puppet characters. They were a Teapot, a Tin can, and a Tomato. Together, they were known as The Kitchen Crew.

Sometimes, these kitchen characters would even talk to the characters from the short stories. At the end of each episode, The Kitchen Crew would sing a song. This song would play as the credits rolled.

Who Performed in the Show?

All the voices and acting roles in Breakfast Serials were done by four talented people. They were Caroline Berry, John Biggins, Lucy Jenkins, and William Petrie.

Exploring Nice Chap

One of the most exciting parts of the show was a segment called Nice Chap. This was an adventure and drama story. It was about a cartoon character who magically came to life!

The Nice Chap story was told in three parts, or "series." Each part connected to the others, but you could also watch them on their own.

Nice Chap: The Beginning

The main character, Nice Chap, was always positive and curious. He was like a grown-up child and always spoke in rhymes. He was created by a lonely artist named Suzie. Suzie drew comics for her company, Cozicomix. Her only friends were plants, including a yucca plant named Peter.

Nice Chap came to life when lightning struck Suzie's drawing board. Soon, Suzie and Nice Chap faced danger. A rival comic company, Megacomix, wanted to stop them. This company was run by Joyce (also called "Clench") and Norris. They had a super-smart computer named "It" and another computer called "Chuck." In the end, Clench and Norris actually became friends with Suzie.

Nice Chap 2: The Supercomputer's Plan

About six months later, the supercomputer "It" caused trouble again. It took control of Norris and tried to take over a TV station called 'Norris Vision'. But Nice Chap and Suzie worked together. They stopped the supercomputer's plans, and everything went back to normal.

Nice Chap 3: A Dark Turn

Another six months passed. On the anniversary of Nice Chap coming to life, something strange happened. Suzie got angry and drew dark eyebrows on him. This made Nice Chap turn evil!

At the end of this story, an evil Nice Chap was defeated by a good version of himself. Suzie felt very sad. She used a special machine called a Crash Machine. This machine sent her into Nice Chap's cartoon world. There, she could be with a positive version of him forever.
