Breitung Hotel facts for kids
The Breitung Hotel was a special building located at 111 South Pioneer Avenue in Negaunee, Michigan. It was named after Edward Breitung, a person of importance in the area. The hotel was designed by David M. Harteau and built between 1879 and 1880. Because of its history and design, it was listed as a Michigan State Historic Site on June 20, 1985.
Sadly, the hotel was later destroyed in a fire. To honor its memory, the park built on the same spot was named Breitung Park in August 2009.
Design and Look
The Breitung Hotel was a three-story building shaped like the letter "L". It was built in a style called Italian Renaissance, which means it had a fancy, classic Italian look. The outside walls were made of cream-colored bricks with brown stone decorations, especially on the corners.
The front of the hotel had a tall, square tower that was four stories high. This tower had a special sloped roof called a mansard roof and an iron balcony on the third floor. A wide porch, known as a veranda, stretched across the front of the building. This porch was typical of the late Victorian era.
