Bribbaree's Past: A Look at History
How Bribbaree Began
The village of Bribbaree started to grow because of a new railway line. This line connected Stockinbingal and Parkes. The Bribbaree railway station first opened its doors in 1916.
Bribbaree was officially named a village on March 23, 1917. This happened while it was part of the Shire of Burrangong. Special areas of land were set aside for the town. About 34.8 hectares (86 acres) were for the main township. Another 97 hectares (240 acres) were for suburban areas. Most of these land plots were sold at an auction in Young on August 8, 1917.
Where the Name Bribbaree Comes From
The village got its name from the nearby Bribbaree Creek. A person named C. A. Irish said the name "Bribbaree" comes from "Boorri-Boolla." This is an Indigenous language term. "Boorri" means "boy" and "Boollo" means "two." This name might refer to a rock formation nearby.
Remembering Local Heroes
A special monument was built in Bribbaree between 1921 and 1922. It honors five soldiers from the village who died in World War I. Their names were Charles Ernest Downey, Alfred Downey, Anthony Steel Caldwell, Hugh Wallace McAlister, and Percy William Geraty. This monument helps everyone remember their bravery and sacrifice.
The Railway Station Closes
The Bribbaree railway station served the community for many years. However, it eventually closed down in 1983.
