The Brick Store is a very old and special building located in Covington, Georgia. It was built way back in 1821. For many years, this building was a central spot for the community. It was so important that the area itself was sometimes called Sun Up, Georgia, Mt. Pleasent, Georgia, or even Brick Store, Georgia.

A Building with Many Lives

Over its long history, the Brick Store has been used for many different things. It started as a general store, where people could buy all sorts of goods. It was also a busy stop for stagecoaches, which were like old-time buses. Travelers could rest here and get supplies.

More Than Just a Store

The Brick Store also served as the local post office, helping people send and receive letters. It even became a schoolhouse, where children learned their lessons. For a time, it was a courtroom and even a jail! Imagine a building that was once a school and a jail at the same time. Martin Kolb also lived in the building for a period.

First Court in Newton County

A very important event happened at the Brick Store. The very first session of the Newton County Superior Court was held right here. This shows how important the building was to the early legal system of the area.

A Place in History

The Brick Store is recognized as a truly historic place. On April 9, 2009, it was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history.

Who Owns the Brick Store Now?

Today, the building is owned by the Trustees of the Newton County Historical Society. This group works to protect and share the history of Newton County. You can find the Brick Store on U.S. Route 278, right where it meets Old Social Circle Road.

Remembering the Past

Around the Brick Store, you can find several markers that tell more of its story. There's a tablet from 1933 that remembers the Stage Coach Crossroads. Another plaque celebrates Charles M. Jordan, who donated the building to the Newton County Historical Society in 1971. There's also a plaque from the landmarks commission, placed in 1990, marking its historical importance.
