Diseased kidney from Richard Bright's Reports of Medical Cases Longman, London (1827–1831); Wellcome Library, London |
Bright's disease was an old name for a group of kidney problems. Doctors used this name a long time ago. Today, we call these conditions nephritis, which means the kidneys are inflamed or swollen.
The main sign of Bright's disease was finding a protein called albumin in the urine. Albumin is normally in your blood, not your urine. People with this condition often had swelling, especially in their legs and face, and sometimes high blood pressure.
Doctors no longer use the term "Bright's disease." This is because we now understand the many different reasons why kidneys can become sick. Each specific cause has its own name.

What is Bright's Disease?
Bright's disease was a general term for several different kidney illnesses. It was named after Dr. Richard Bright, who first described these problems in the 1800s. He noticed that people with certain symptoms often had kidney damage.
Why is it Not Used Anymore?
Medical science has learned a lot since Dr. Bright's time. We now have better ways to find out exactly what is wrong with the kidneys. Instead of one big name, doctors now use more specific names for kidney diseases. These names tell us more about the exact cause or type of kidney problem.
For example, some kidney diseases are caused by infections, while others are caused by the body's own immune system attacking the kidneys. Each of these has a different, specific name today.
Richard Bright: The Doctor
Dr. Richard Bright was a British doctor who lived from 1789 to 1858. He was a very important figure in medical history. He was one of the first doctors to connect specific symptoms that a patient had while alive to what he saw in their organs after they died.
His Discoveries
In 1827, Dr. Bright published his findings about kidney diseases. He showed that swelling in the body, protein in the urine, and kidney damage were all linked. This was a big step forward in understanding how the kidneys work and what happens when they get sick. His work helped doctors understand kidney problems much better.
