A Look Back: The Store's History
The land where the Brisk & Jacobson Store stands has a long past. Before this building, there was another two-story brick building there. It was built around 1850.
Early Days: Daniels, Eglin, and Company
From 1852 to 1865, the first building was home to Daniels, Eglin, and Company. They were "dry goods" merchants. This means they sold things like fabrics, clothing, and other household items.
A New Owner and a New Building
In 1865, a man named Isaac Goldsmith bought the property. He paid a lot of money for it: $50,000! Goldsmith was part of a business called Goldsmith, Frohlichstein, and Company.
The new building, which is the one we see today, was finished in 1866. It has four stories. A cool feature is its cast iron front. This special facade was made by Daniel D. Badger's Architectural Iron Works in New York City.
Brisk & Jacobson Takes Over
By 1867, Isaac Goldsmith's business partnership had changed. He became the president of a bank in Mobile. William Frohlichstein, his former partner, started a new dry goods company.
This new company, Frohlichstein, Hahn and Company, moved into the building. Also, another business called J. Brisk and Company shared the space. In 1869, J. Brisk and Company became Brisk & Jacobson. Their main office was in Plainfield, New Jersey. They focused on selling men's clothes, both wholesale (to other stores) and retail (directly to customers).
The building was known as the Brisk & Jacobson Store until 1893. After that, many different businesses used the building over the years. It remains an important part of Mobile's history.
