Broken Island is one of the many interesting places in the Falkland Islands. It is found in an area called Byron Sound, located just north of West Falkland. The island's name comes from its unique and unusual shape, which looks like it has been broken into many pieces.
Exploring Broken Island's Shape
Broken Island gets its name because its land has many bays and inlets. These are like small arms of the sea that reach into the land. This gives the island a very jagged and uneven coastline.
The middle part of Broken Island is mostly round. From this central area, two long, thin pieces of land, called spits, stretch out. One spit goes towards the west, and the other twists towards the east. If you look at it on a map, it looks a bit like the letter "S" lying on its side.
Where is Broken Island?
Around Broken Island, you can find several smaller islands. These are often called islets. Broken Island is located directly south of Pebble Island. It is also situated to the east of Golding Island. Knowing these nearby islands helps you understand exactly where Broken Island is on a map of the Falkland Islands.
